Super Easy DIY Wall Hanging - Pretty Real

Super Easy DIY Wall Hanging

9:18 PM

I love wall hangings, but I don't have $100+ to spend on one. So of course I decided to make my own. Here's how. Brace yourself- it's so, so easy.

Materials*
yarn in various colors/textures
dowel (I used a marshmallow roasting stick left over from this project)
ribbon to hang or you can use your yarn.
optional: specialty string. I used a string of beads and metallic twine.
*a few affiliate links included for reference. I had everything I needed and didn't purchase anything for this project. If you have questions about specific items I used, feel free to comment!

Step 1:
Cut your dowel to your desired length using a craft knife.

Step 2:
Decide on pattern. Mine started out random but then I mirrored what I did on the left side, on the right. You can play around with it as you begin and decide what works. Cut your yarn. You can cut all of it as once--just make sure you are good with what length you want your hanging, or you can cut piece by piece. It's probably quicker to cut a bunch at once but I did it a few pieces at a time so I wouldn't have to commit to length. (More on trimming and length in step 5). Hint: if your yarn is thin, you might want to double or triple up. If you look at my closeups you'll see I used double on some colors, triple on others.

Step 3:
Loop the yarn through as shown.

Step 4 (optional):
Tie in a knot. I didn't show this step. I decided to do it part way through because the loop wasn't as taut as I wanted it. I left the middle section unknotted (is that a word?) because I liked its look better. If you don't mind the loops a bit loose you can leave it. Once you knot it, it's harder to move/rearrange so if you decide to knot make sure it's how you want it.

Step 5:
You can trim as you go, or make all of your yarn the same length and then trim at the end. If you're using specialty materials and don't want to waste it you'd want to decided ahead of time on length and cut appropriately. I trimmed slightly as I went  but then gave it a trim at the end to make sure it was longest in the middle.

Step 6:
Cut a piece of yarn (or ribbon would be pretty!), tie to both ends of the dowel, hang it, and enjoy your beautiful one of a kind DIY wall hanging!

    1. I love that color combo! I'd love to decorate our office like that but I have to share it with my husband. Maybe I can get away with it if I just add navy? ;)
