Our "chemo-is-over-10-year-anniversary-baby-moon" Getaway.

9:11 AM

Joe and I finally made it on our little getaway!  This year we celebrated 10 years married and had loosely planned on a tropical vacation alone.  Then the diagnosis happened and that turned into a still wonderful getaway to a beautiful house on the beach in Charleston, SC.  Then the infection happened and that turned into a 3 night getaway to local Maine.  I'm not gonna lie- initially I was heartbroken.  I couldn't even bring myself to update you here on Taste{Full} because I was so discouraged over yet another setback.  Since it was exactly around the time Joe's last chemo was supposed to happen I think I'd let my guard down and emotionally had moved on to our next phase in life.  But at the end of the day I knew that the important thin was that Joe was ok.  And if there's one thing I've learned this year it's that we can plan all we want but at the end of the day it's not totally up to us.  And I have faith that everything happens for a reason and that God will take what the enemy intended for evil and use it for good.  Quite honestly there are some people who aren't fortunate enough to get away ever.  to anywhere.  And going away is going away.  I still got to spend uninterrupted time with my boo.  And I still got a chance to miss my kids.  Cause we mamas need those opportunities every once in a while.  At least this mama does! And it made me thankful that we live near so many great coastal towns.  Because it truly was a wonderful vacation.  Speaking of coastal towns...

we stayed at The Cliff House Resort and Spa in Cape Neddick, Maine...about 5 minutes outside of Ogunquit Maine.  I highly recommend it!  Our room wasn't overly fancy but it was nice enough and this was our view. Not bad right?

A short walk to the main hotel and you have a great restaurant with ocean views, a lounge with live music on the weekends, and other stuff I didn't care much about this time around (i.e. indoor pool, hot tub, a gym, gift shop, spa services, etc).  There was a small outdoor pool just outside of our room and a much nicer, larger infinity pool overlooking the ocean outside the main hotel.  Here's that view:

There was also outdoor seating with fire pits overlooking the cliffs.  The hotel itself was just amazing and we could have easily just hung out there.  The beauty of being parents to multiple little ones is that just getting quiet hang out time is a luxury--there's really not pressure to DO a lot!  And that worked out because I'm 37 weeks pregnant and Joe was just 3 weeks out from his last treatment so we both get tired fairly easily.  That didn't hold us back from taking the hotel shuttle to Perkins Cove to do some sightseeing and walk around.  We walked a ton actually.  We walked Marginal way, shopped, ate ice-cream, and more.  It was such a fun day.

and yeah we took a lot of selfies.

 37 weeks!
pretty spot in Perkins Cove.

view from the restaurant.

Fresh lemonade has to do when you can't drink.  Non-alcoholic vacation is kind of an oxymoron. ;)

A picture that we didn't take ourselves! A nice bystander offered.

Joe's great grandmother's name was Nellie Littlefield so he stopped to take a photo this little inn.

The next day however we were exhausted so beach day it was.  Sadly the tide came in super early so our beach day was cut short. :(  But the 1 1/2 hours we got there were heavenly and afterward we were content to hang out in the hotel chatting, blogging (Joe not me!), and crafting.
Can I just stop a moment and tell you how much I love my floppy hat.  Oh and my husband. ;)

We ate at some yummy places and some not so great places.  Breakfast at the Egg & I was delicious.  It was super crowded and a bit slow but the food was great!  The Cliff House's restaurant was also great. I finally gave in and ordered a Lobster Roll.  Can't vacation in Maine and not eat one right?  My very first lobster roll (ever) was disgusting so I was scarred for some time...but their's was ah-mazing!  Our last dinner was at Jonathan's.  Don't get me started. I was not pleased with the experience at all.  Long story short they forgot my order and then made me wait forever while they made it and then made excuses instead of making it right.  I complained (via facebook- my personal page and their's) and I have to say that a manager called back to try to make it right. I was impressed that they called me a few times in order to talk about my experience and offer me something in return.  Still it was a bummer that Jonathan's was our "special" night out and we were disappointed.  Oh and I should mention The Tuckaway Tavern.  We stopped there on our way to Maine (It's in Raymond) for lunch.  It was delicious with a great atmosphere.  It's only about 15-20 minutes away from us so I can't believe I'd never heard of it or eaten there but I highly recommend it!  So other than Jonathan's, there were no flops!  The weekend was incredible and we were so blessed to be able to get a breather between chemo, and house-guests, and baby prep, and child rearing, and baby's arrival.

This was just outside our room! We totally lucked out being on the end vs having rooms on both sides of us.

I'll leave you with a song we sang in church shortly after the disappointment of Joe's infection and canceling our other previous trip.  God knew just the encouragement I needed to hear that morning...

specifically the verse:

I will look back and see that you are faithful
I look ahead believing you are able
Jesus Lord of all

Prince of peace
Perfect Healer
All my life, all my cares on you
King of Kings
Mighty Savior
All my life, all my cares on you...

It brings tears to my eyes even now.  These past 6 months have been some of the most challenging of my life.  But in the midst I know God has been faithful and I know I'll look back and see His faithfulness even more.  Despite tough circumstances God is good.  I feel so blessed that I have that foundation to cling to during tough times.

    1. Thanks Laurel. I appreciate your concern/support! That hat was from old navy! I was just sad it was sold out in the other color before I got to it. In the midst of trials, there's always awesome $15 floppy hats from old navy to boost one's spirits. ;)
