I love watching people remodel their spaces, but often I don't have the time or the budget for a huge remodel. Over time, I've learned that you can make a plain room look nice by making smart decorating decisions. Use bold colors- bold, high energy hues are trending and using them in strategic places is a great way to accentuate features...or hide them. Choose a colorful pair of lamps or even a bold wall color like in our primary bedroom.

Use natural materials- bringing nature in instantly adds life to any room and sometimes that's just what a boring space needs! A simple white room with lots of woven accessories or plants stops me in my scroll every time! 

Don't forget about art- No fancy millwork? No problem! Add art to immediately add interest to a wall. Keep it eclectic by using a combination of small art, oversized art, textile art, and gallery walls. Surrealism is trending and Joss & Main has plenty of options to choose from. Use expressive and interesting shapes and silhouettes. One of my favorite things to do when designing a room is to add a bold 'moment'- an interesting mirror rather than a simple round one made such a difference. This is especially important for 'plain' rooms without a lot of architectural interest. This rattan mirror is a perfect example of a statement piece that catches your eye (and detracts from a basic dresser). Unexpected and whimsical furniture pieces infuse new life into a plain room. 

Textiles are your friend- think pillows, throw blankets, rugs (yes, even over carpet- see above!). A thoughtfully chosen rug accomplishes something that even the most beautiful flooring does not. Textiles warm up a space and add interest and livability.
